skirting the issue

I'm pretty excited for weather that doesn't require me to wear tights so I can wear this skirt again. I made it by hand and it isn't lined, so it gets stuck to my tights and leggings and bunches up around my crotch when I walk, so I like to limit it to non-tights outfits. It's actually one of my favorite skirts, and it makes me excited that I sewed it by myself (though it was relatively easy to make). I saw the fabric in a store and immediately wanted to make a skirt out of it. I'm sure everyone knows by now that I'm a pretty big fan of prints. I actually was in JoAnn's Fabrics the other day doing an errand and was drawn in by all the pretty fabric. I hate going to craft stores because I just want to buy everything and make crafts. A craft store is a dangerous place for me to be...

I've worn this skirt quite a bit in the past so I wanted to look back on the times that I styled it up, since summer is coming sometime soon (hopefully, when the monsoon season decides to take a break for a second or two), and I'll be able to shed my tights and wear this skirt more often.
This last outfit is from a few days ago. I wasn't super in love with the styling, but hey, you can't win 'em all, eh? I got this cardigan the other day at Value Village at the same time I got my Old Hollywood party dress and that "Trudy Campbell" vintage dress I wore a few days ago. It's super cozy and a bit oversized like a grampa sweater (and probably was a grampa sweater, I grabbed it out of the mens section).

Like a Virgin

I know I'm about a decade late to this party, but I just saw The Virgin Suicides for the first time a few days ago and I absolutely loved it. It's set in one of my favorite time periods so the whole set and styling made my insides do little excited squiggles the whole time! It's on Netflix instant play, if anyone has Netflix and wants to watch it!

The styling just has this amazing 70's, summer, young vibe. It reminds me of summers in Spokane when I would ride my little pink stingray banana-seat bike on hot afternoons to the liquor store with my friends, and then laze around on blankets in the front yard sipping on summery mixed drinks.

I liked the styling so much that I decided to create some style inspiration boards based on a few of the characters. Most of the items are from Modcloth, and if you click the photo it'll link you to what every piece is.

Tinseltown, WA

Saturday was Dan's Old Hollywood birthday party, and it was a blast! For some reason I always get super excited about dress up parties and spend hours getting ready. I really wanted to try doing marcel waves for a sleek, vintage look. It took almost two hours and tons of hairspray getting my hair to obey. I like the way it turned out though! I probably won't try it again, but now that I know the technique, I think it might be useful for some more casual styles.
A bunch of people came to the party, including two of our great friends from college, Molly and Anna! They live up in Seattle now, so we get to hang out now and then, which is fantastic. I wish I lived in a house instead of an apartment. I love throwing parties, and it's kind of impossible to have a party in an apartment, unless you want to play cribbage and listen to sigur ros on low. I have a feeling the people in my complex aren't the kind of people who stay up late, talking laughing and listening to music. Or would take kindly to someone else in the complex doing so. The last time I lived somewhere conducive to parties was in 2008. Boo. Maybe someday soon...

I made this fun fringe backdrop for photos! I bought silver and gold metallic fringe garland at a party store, and cut them into 5 ft. portions, then hung them alternating the colors. We had lots of fancy mixed drinks, but I ended up kind of liking how the cheap Rainier can matched with the red and gold and silver. It cracked me up how Rainier is totally incongruous with a fancy Old Hollywood party.

I'm a terrible blogger... for some reason I didn't get a full outfit shot, or a picture of Dan and I posing in front of the fringe! Probably the best shot of the full outfit is the one three photos down where Ben and I are being goofy.

Dan and I ended the night swing dancing to big band jazz in the middle of the living room. I love dancing so much. I feel like there's just no opportunity to actually do it. I secretly want to take swing dancing classes. I remember in High School there used to be dance classes you could attend before the homecoming dance and they taught us how to do swing, fox trot, waltz, and so on. As pretty much all high school functions go, it was kind of awkward, but once everyone got over it, we all had so much fun! I wish I could remember all the intertwining spin moves from the swing class. One was called "the octopus" and it was so complicated, haha!

Trudy Campbell

When I went thrifting the other day to get my dress for the old hollywood party, I ran across this amazing vintage dress that looked like something straight off the Mad Men set. At first I thought it looked like a Betty Draper dress, but on second thought, I think it's probably more of a Trudy Campbell dress. It's a bit too big for me, but I couldn't not get it. It was an only like seven bucks!

I was sitting outside in the sun yesterday when this guy stops and compliments my hat. Apparently he was from Texas and was like, "Man! I haven't seen a hat like that around these parts! I'm from Texas and they wear hats like that down there!" It was cute.
